THE FIRST AND THE LAST

Featured Scriptures: Revelation 1:12-18, Revelation 5:9-10, Revelation 4:10-11
There is a throne that has never been vacant. A King whose reign has never been threatened. A Lamb before whom heaven bows. While kingdoms rise and fall and generations come and go, Revelation pulls back the curtain on a reality that has never changed: Jesus Christ is alive, victorious and worthy of all praise.
"The First and the Last", featured on Until the King Returns, enters the breathtaking throne-room imagery of Revelation. The song moves from the risen Son of Man walking among the lampstands to the Lamb who purchased people for God with His blood, before widening into a vision of elders, living creatures and ultimately all creation worshipping the One upon the throne.
Revelation 1:12-18 presents Jesus in unveiled glory: the Son of Man among the lampstands, His voice like rushing waters, His eyes like blazing fire, holding the stars and declaring Himself "the First and the Last", the Living One who was dead and is now alive forevermore. Revelation 5:9-10 turns heaven's attention towards the Lamb, worthy to take the scroll because He was slain and purchased people for God from every tribe, language, people and nation. Revelation 4:10-11 brings the twenty-four elders before the throne, laying down their crowns in worship and declaring that God alone is worthy to receive glory, honour and power. Together, these passages reveal Jesus not merely as a figure from history, but as the risen and reigning Lord worshipped in heaven.
Robes of white. Stars held in His hand. Eyes of fire. A voice like rushing seas. Golden crowns falling before the throne. A sealed scroll and the Lamb who alone is worthy to open it. The imagery of "The First and the Last" draws almost entirely from Revelation's vision of heaven, allowing the listener to move through scenes of majesty, redemption and worship until the song itself begins to feel like part of heaven's "new song".
For those searching for Christian songs about Revelation, worship songs about Jesus as the First and the Last, songs inspired by Revelation 1, Revelation 4 or Revelation 5, music about the throne room of heaven, the Lamb of God, the twenty-four elders, casting crowns before Jesus, the seven churches, the scroll, the four living creatures, the blood of Jesus, Christ's victory over death, or worship from every tribe and nation, "The First and the Last" brings those biblical images together in one declaration of Christ's worthiness.
One day, every earthly song will give way to the worship already resounding around the throne. Until then, "The First and the Last" gives us words to join it now: blessing, honour, glory and power belong to the Lamb, the risen King whose beginning has no beginning and whose reign will have no end.
