THE VOICE AMONG THE LAMPSTANDS

Featured Scriptures: Revelation 1:13-16, Revelation 1:17-18, Revelation 2:1
Before Revelation shows us seals breaking, trumpets sounding or kingdoms falling, it shows us Jesus standing among His churches. John turns towards the voice speaking to him and sees the risen Son of Man in overwhelming glory: eyes like fire, feet like bronze and a voice like rushing waters. "The Voice Among the Lampstands" begins To the Church with that vision of Christ present among His people.
Featured on To the Church, "The Voice Among the Lampstands" places the listener beside John in exile as Revelation opens. Seven golden lampstands appear, representing the churches, but the centre of the vision is not the lampstands themselves. Jesus is walking among them. He knows their works, holds the seven stars in His hand and speaks with both authority and nearness to the Church that bears His name.
Revelation 1:13-16 provides the song's extraordinary portrait of the Son of Man among the lampstands, clothed in a long robe, with white hair, blazing eyes, bronze-like feet and a voice like many waters. Revelation 1:17-18 records John's response of falling before Him and Christ's reassuring command, "Do not be afraid", before declaring Himself the First and the Last, the Living One who died and is alive forevermore, holding the keys of death and Hades. Revelation 2:1 then confirms that Christ walks among the seven golden lampstands. Together, these passages establish the truth upon which the album begins: Jesus is not distant from His Church. He is present among her, seeing, speaking and calling her to faithfulness.
Golden lampstands. Seven stars held securely in Christ's right hand. A priestly robe. White hair, fiery eyes and burnished feet. A voice roaring like many waters. "The Voice Among the Lampstands" draws heavily from Revelation's visual language while giving those images a pastoral purpose. The One whose glory causes John to fall in fear is also the One who says, "Fear not." Majesty and intimacy meet in the same Christ. He searches the heart, but He also tends the flame.
For anyone searching for Christian songs about the seven churches of Revelation, worship songs inspired by Revelation 1, songs about the seven golden lampstands, the Son of Man, Jesus as the First and the Last, the Living One, the seven stars, Jesus holding the keys of death and Hades, Christ walking among His churches, Revelation 2:1, Jesus' messages to the churches, repentance, spiritual revival, hearing what the Spirit says to the Church, or preparing the Church for Christ's return, "The Voice Among the Lampstands" brings those themes together at the beginning of Revelation's message. Before Christ addresses what is wrong within His churches, Scripture first reveals who is speaking to them.
Before the seals, there is a voice. Before judgement reaches the world, Christ speaks to His Church. "The Voice Among the Lampstands" opens To the Church with Jesus where Revelation places Him: among His people, close enough to know them completely and glorious enough to call them higher. He still tends the flame. He still walks among the lampstands. And the Church must still have ears to hear what the Spirit is saying.
